Downtown was an organically developed animation and sprung from a silly idea I wanted to explore of a funky dude dancing with his speakerbot against a backdrop of the city. As opposed to my Amazebot, Bright Idea, animation, Downtown was loosely structured to allow for quick changes.
Ryan Cassidy developed the music for Downtown. When we met, he played some of his previous work for me (all good), and I asked for a funky beat. Because I knew I wanted to cut the animation in time to his music, I wasn’t too fixated on a hard-lined storyboard. I knew I wanted to show certain visuals (black and white to colour, dancing buildings, speakerbot, funky colours, sun goddess) to form the story I had in mind, but I trusted Ryan’s music to provide the right inspirational moments for when those visuals would hit. Once I had the music, I re-cut my base animatic to the music, and just dove in, animating each arc sequentially.
